Early Motown performers brought their music to Charlie’s Place in the days before integration. It provided a place for African-American artists to perform, including Dizzy Gillespie, Little Richard, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, The Drifters and many others. Charlie and Sarah Fitzgerald were owners and opened the business in 1937. It quickly became a popular stop along the “chitlin” circuit during the Jim Crow era. Chitlin circuits were nightclubs that popular Black artists of the time would perform or frequent.
In June of 2021, Charlie’s Place became part of the African American Civil Rights Network.
